The Skala icon family

Top row: Skala and a .skala document.
Bottom row: Skala Preview and Skala View for iOS.

We just submitted Skala View 1.8 to Apple, and the update includes some of the icons shown here, so I thought I’d present the full set (as they’re going to be seen anyway). The icons are likely to evolve, but I’m fairly happy with their current state.

Skala development is going well. We’re still a while off shipping a beta, mostly due to the insanely crazy concepts and features we want included in version 1, but decent progress is made every week.

Thank you very much for you patience.

Lock Screen

iOS 7 seems to be laying the groundwork, but I can't wait 'til we push it just a tiny bit further... nothing unrealistic.

Notification Center does a pretty good job at showing me what I'm going to do today. But the lock screen is the gateway to me and my data, and it can do a lot better by taking some little steps.

A greeting. This humanizes the interaction between you and a technical device. My phone never leaves my side. Siri is my assistant. Someone finally discovered the "Happy Birthday" feature in the OS X setup. When I wake up, and first turn on my phone in the morning, there's no reason it can't greet me like an assistant or butler.

"Good morning. It's 62° and sunny."

The greeting can be switched out during the day of course to "Good evening," or have specific ones for different days. My phone is starting to learn where and when I go to work, it could even be used to nudge you. "Running late, today!" or even "Finally, the weekend."

Notification Center in iOS 7 tells me the weather for the day, but doesn't always give me the weather for now. The weather is so fascinating (and easy to collect data) that many apps are spawned to solve this. But all will pale in comparison if the lock screen ever shows it.

Meetings. Again, Notification Center has a kind of calendar view to show you your day at a glance, but it means again pulling it down from the lock screen or elsewhere in the system. At the very least, your soonest meeting could be displayed, and again, maybe with a nudge.

"You're meeting with Michelle in 23 minutes." or even "You only have 5 minutes to get to your meeting with Patrick."

Just as Music (while playing) takes over the lock screen, so too can this most basic information in the morning hours and even throughout your day.

I really hope to see these kinds of simple changes (and more!) happen in the future for iOS, because no app can solve these problems.

Back in July I made this comparison. It's pretty interesting how much overlap there is in the construction of ostensibly different sans-serif UI fonts.

Try squinting, it's fun to see how your eye averages the seven fonts together.

It's always bothered me that Apple doesn't use springboard pages to display widgets, especially since the existing pull-down menu just seems so cumbersome and poorly designed, so I decided to imagine how something like weather and upcoming events might be better implemented into iOS.

Deliveries for Apple Watch

I've been tinkering with this for the past week or so. These are actually screenshots of the app, already functional—and displayed in the wonderful Bezel app by Troy Gaul.

Working with the Apple Watch SDK has been interesting and fun. As you may know already, the guts of the app run on your iPhone, and the watch itself just has a storyboard with the layout, and some images files. The iPhone sends the watch data and simple instructions for configuring the display. The watch needs to know how to construct the layout on its own, so layout is a bit more like CSS than UIKit. You use groups to line things up and add padding, each element has a vertical and horizontal alignment, and so on. It's simplistic but by nesting groups you can do quite a bit with it.

Anyway here's where I'm with it right now. It's sort of a cross between the Today widget and the iOS app—you get a list of deliveries you can tap on for more information. The detail view has a simple map, and you can force tap to archive or manually refresh. There will also be a "Glance" with a summary of deliveries arriving soon, and notifications with action buttons just like the iOS app.

Muir: Set Icons Automatically

For the first time since I started making icons, I now have a little application I can bundle with my icon packs that automatically replaces the icons on your system with the ones in a set.

It's super cool! You can try it out in the latest Muir release, or in the Master Collection (all Muir sets in one, with extra bonus icons!) coming out soon.

Set Icons was made by James Moore on my couch right here in San Francisco, with help of setfileicon by Damien Bobillot. Icon is a quickie by yours truly.

(I just figured this out, but apparently you can use 'L' on your keyboard to show James & I your gratitude. Yay, keyboard shortcuts!)

TO INSTALL:

Download the attached png file, open it and copy the image to your clipboard, click "get info" for Evernote in your "Applications" folder in OSx, click on the little icon on the very top left, and press ⌘ + V (paste).

I'm not going to lie, this is probably the most fun I've ever had animating something.

You may be familiar with the work of Steven Crosby (rocketbloc™). His Pokébiome Illustrations are wonderful, and I approached him a few weeks ago asking if I could take a crack at animating them. Here is the result of the first of three animations in the collection. I bet you can guess what the next will be!
